In a city that has been ravaged by three civil wars since independence we get to witness a cult of elegance that operates along strict guidelines. For the sapeurs of Bacongo, called Le Sape, style is a religion. As we see these men walk the unpaved, garbage-strewn streets of their neighbourhood in their tailored finery one is confronted with a confusion of feelings. Many of Le Sape live in poverty, they have scrimped, saved and hustled in order to acquire clothes which have made them local celebrities. Daniele Tamagni’s made a beautiful pictorial essay called ‘Gentlemen of Bacongo‘. A true classic!

Gourmet is a brand that truly defies categorization. Above All, cornerstones influences are italian and italian-american culture. From old World italy and its grand tradition of men’s wear tailoring with luxe fabrics and trends that have driven the fashion market, to italians in the metropolitan enclaves across the USA at batting cages and local giglio feasts wearing sweatpants with an undeniable swagger; Gourmet is all of the above.

For a month the centre of Arnhem will literally form the core of the third edition of the Arnhem Mode Biënnale. SHAPE is the connecting thread of the greatest cultural fashion event in the world. This year more than 80 fashion labels are participating, including Lanvin, Raf Simons, Hussein Chalayan, Jil Sander, Rick Owens, Martin Margiela and Viktor & Rolf.
Some 150 garments in Arnhem will make it apparent what the aspect of SHAPE signifies and why ‘form’ is so topical in fashion. A high-profile exhibition, satellite presentations, lectures, shows and a magazine provide insight into SHAPE. A wide-ranging cultural scope makes this third biennale intriguing and accessible for everyone.

The Arnhem Mode Biënnale:
june 6 – july 6 2009
Throughout the centre of Arnhem, in and around the City Hall, the market, and in and around the Eusebius Church.
The exhibition will be open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Last admissions at 8 p.m.
